View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Johann Michael Heineccius. The German historian and theologian is shown here as a chest image to the right. He turned his head to the left towards the observer, where he looks past the left slightly. He wears a long, curly wig, plus the robe of a clergyman with buffalo. Behind him, a broad curtain in the picture is drawn from left to right, which hides a bookcase on the right. A lettering with the name and profession of the depicted follows directly under the rectangular frame. Johann Michael Heineccius studied in Jena, Gießen and Helmstedt and worked in Goslar as the second ordained preacher to St. Peter and Paul. Together with his brother Johann Gottlieb (BS-III 567), who became a house-teacher of law students of a count there, he moved to Halle and received a position at the Ulrichskirche, later even at the market church, where a portrait painting of his is still in place today, and also became a scholarch and high school teacher as well as a consistent councilor of the Prussian managed Duchy of Magdeburg. In 1720 he was appointed vice-general superintendent of the same. The leaf is not signed because it is circumcised, but it was attributed to the Leipzig engraver Johann Georg Mentzel (1677-1743). It was published as a frontispiece in the publication of the owner of the hassle Rengerschen bookstore, Johann Gottfried Renger (-1718): “Neue Bibliothec Oder erschien und Urtheile von Es Es Es Es Und allerhand erschien Es zur ScholEs” (17.
