Honorius Augustodunensis, the Song of Songs, and Synagoga Conversa

View through CrossRef
This chapter focuses on the eschatological Jew elaborated in the Song of Songs commentary of Honorius Augustodunensis. Beyond the traditional Pauline prediction, Honorius described the conversion of Israel as occurring before that of the plenitude of the Gentiles. Honorius also situates the Song of Songs within the entirety of Holy Scripture, which contains two testaments as the expression of the Holy Spirit. The chapter cites that Honorius' portrayal of the Shunamite bride and Synagoga conversa bears evaluation from numerous different perspectives. It also considers the tone of Honorius' reformulation of Israel's role at the end of days contrasting sharply with the increasingly harsh tenor of Christian Adversus Judaeos texts of the twelfth century.
