Split, Solin, Kaštela, Trogir, 21 : city of cities

View through CrossRef
The "City of Cities" project is a vision of the development of cities around the Kaštela Bay, Split, Solin, Kaštela to Trogir. Its starting point is the author's reflection on the space bounded on one side by the sea, and on the other by the mountains of Kozjak, Klis, Mosor and Perun. Traffic congestion is increasingly burdening everyday life and life in this area, the area of Split, Solin, Kaštela, Trogir, Podstrana and Omiš, including the one towards the interior - Klis, Dugopolje and all the way to Sinj. The situation is even more complicated during the tourist season and the influx of several million passengers, all of whom, without exception, pass through several traffic bottlenecks. The transfer of seasonal passengers, as well as the daily movements of residents in the aforementioned area, are reaching their maximum capacity. In the last three years, they have significantly exceeded it during peak days and months. The direct consequence is an increasingly impaired quality of life for residents, significant financial losses and negative environmental impacts. All of the above clearly shows that this area, professionally called the metropolitan area of Split, will live, if it does not already live today, as one city. What makes a city a city is its infrastructure in the broader sense, including roads, utility networks, schools, health institutions, as well as facilities for culture and sports, everything that makes up public and common spaces for activity. Today, it is certain that this space is not evenly developed and it will take decades until spatial opportunities are balanced. The basis of balanced development is the transport network and corridors that should preserve the space and direct development in the future. The development of transport media, not only road, but also rail, maritime, and bicycle, is the only way to transform this space into a single agglomeration in which all urban areas will have equal status and equal opportunities for quality and different ways of living. The interconnection of transport modalities, the efficiency of movement, and the quality of the experience of space in motion are prerequisites for the transformation of life in this space.
