In his childhood, Kazantzakis went through the last phase of the Cretan struggle for freedom. This experience had a great influence on his life and work. In ‘Captain Michalis’, even more than in his other novels, this impact is obvious. An analysis of the most important elements of this book leads to the conclusion that it is not merely a story about the Cretan struggle for freedom but that it also reflects Kazantzakis’ philosophical concepts.
