The article presents the phenomenon of theater gossiping and the circulation of rumors behind the scenes as potential material both for biographic studies and reconstruction of the socio-moral context of an actress’s working life in the 19th century. The author explores two documents: Kazimierz Chłędowski’s Pamiętniki (Memoires) and Michał Chomiński’s Notaty (Notes) insofar as they concern personal life of Helena Modjeska, an eminent member and guest star of Kraków and Warsaw theaters in 1865-85. Referring to Klaus Thiele- -Dormann’s ‘psychology of rumor,’ the author looks for motives and functions offered by the ritual of gossiping in theater.
