Batiked cotton headscarf with foliage and vine ornaments

View through Europeana Collections
This batiked headscarf appears on the front cover of the book Batik. Drawn in Wax, by Itie van Hout, curator of textiles at the Tropenmuseum. It is a square headscarf for men and is wrapped around the head according to local custom. The style is clearly Cirebon, as can be seen from the bright colors and motifs. In Cirebon the batik was done by men and not by women as in most known batik regions (van Hout, 2001:157).
