URNA, two pieces, with lid. Pear shaped with lock.1650, the Dutch Ostindian Kompaniet began to look for porcelain for the European market in Japan, after the collapse of the Chinese Mingdynasty. The acquisition grew rapidly and between 1659 and 1757 the furnaces in Arita exported huge quantities of porcelain. Some objects, like these great vases, were specially commissioned for European royalty. They are opulent, with relief castings and varnish, applied to unburnt blue-white porcelain, as well as with fricosty gilding. They once belonged to King Karl XV (1826-1872), were bought at auction by Carl Adolf Sterky (1810-1891) and subsequently sold by his wife to Bukowskis, where Wilhelmina von Hallwyl bought them in 1896 from art dealer H. Bukowski, Stockholm. Price 2.000 Kr.
