The Teachings of R. Menahem Mendel of Vitebsk

View through CrossRef
This chapter examines the teachings of R. Menahem Mendel of Vitebsk. The great importance that R. Menahem Mendel attached to faith can be seen in the astounding example—admittedly linked to the interpretation of scriptural verses—which he adduced in order to explain in concrete terms the difference between a person who fulfils the Torah and the commandments spontaneously and one who fulfils them after faith is implanted in him. Torah not preceded by fear and faith is valueless. In other words, faith has a kind of settling and stabilizing power. Devekut appears on various levels in R. Menahem Mendel's writings; he frequently couples faith with devekut. According to him, devekut is faith without the application of reason.
