Soviet event poster of the Evening celebrating the 100th anniversary of classical Yiddish writer Mendele Mocher Sforim (1836-1936). The event is organized under auspices of the celebration committee of the Union of the Soviet Writers, chaired by Maxim Gorky. The evening took place on March 2, 1936, at 7 PM, at the Pillar Hall of the House of the Unions in Moscow. The keynote address was by Boris Volin, a head of the Soviet censorship authority (Glavlit). The speakers included major Soviet Yiddish and Russian authors, political and cultural figures, such as Isaak Babel, David Bergelson, Lelonid Leonov, Moshe Litvakov, Perets Markish, Solomon Mikhoels, Karl Radek, and others. The evening’s program also included music recital conducted by Aleksandr Krein and Lev Pul’ver, reading by Vinogradskii, and folk songs by S. Radamskii.
