CASTRATIO ANGELICA. 29

View through CrossRef
The present publication offers a commented Russian translation of chapter 29 of Historia Lausiaca by bishop Palladius, which is absent from the Russian translation made before the Revolution and reprinted nowadays. The translation is accompanied by an extensive introduction, where an attempt is made to observe the emergence and spread of the tradition about a mystical emasculation of a monk by an angel, which is a top of narration in the story of the monk Helias. This tradition is expected to appear in Egypt (presumably in the second half of the IVth cent.) and it could be attributed to some characteristic features of ascetic practices in Egypt at this period.
