Of Love and Politics: Reassessing Manuela Sáenz and Simón Bolívar, 1822–1830

AbstractThis article critically examines the relationship between Simon Bolívar (aka the “Liberator”) and Manuela Sáenz, dispelling some of the romantic mist that long has surrounded it and that has obscured historical understanding of the famous couple. It also reassesses the relationship from Sáenz's perspective. It shows not only how Sáenz actively pursued an affair with her lover, but, how she integrated herself into his organization, becoming his informant and personal staff archivist and ultimately, one of his premier political allies. It, thus, seeks to shed light both on her remarkable career and on the nature of female citizenship in Spanish America in the early republican era.
