What Are the Reasons for Love?

<p><span>Romanticism was an intellectual and artistic movement from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. The movement focused on reasoning and materialism. It emphasizes individuality, emotion, imagination, and transcendentalism (Britannica,2024). The ideology of this movement challenges rationalism. Romanticism emphasizes emotions and irrationality over rationalism. Consequently, Romanticism has made us interested in emotion and irrationalism. When it comes to these, the topic of love can’t be avoided. Naturally, the topic of love becomes the scope of the research.&nbsp; Indeed, many people advise things like “follow your heart, not your head.” When this advice is said by someone, naturally, the only thing that comes to most people’s minds is love. After all, when discussing and talking about the heart, the philosophy of love cannot be excluded. Additionally, individual experiences are different when it comes to love. The concept of love is based on subjective nature. It is hard to base on the nature of the objective. Even the definition of love varies from individual to individual. Because there is no universal agreement or consensus on what is the definition of love. For example: In the bible love is defined as “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (Jarret, 2023, 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 NIV). Thus, The different religions have different definitions of love. Moreover, Lewis (2014) said there are four types of love: Storge(empathy bond), Philia(friend bond), Eros( romantic love), and Agape(unconditional "God" love). Most romantic literature used to describe love as magic. It just happened. In other words, It doesn’t have a meaning or an end. It's just love. When one person falls in love with another one, there are always questions. “Why do people fall in love? Why with this significant person? Can the reasons be found? Does One individual love another due to reasons? Or is one individual finding reasons because of love? Or maybe from the point of view of no reason view, love doesn’t need to have reasons. Solomon (2002) said, “The idea that reasons for love might be unconscious and go unacknowledged opens up a vast territory of mysteries and accusations". Thus, the relationship between love and reason is so vague. Therefore, this essay aims to explore the questions “What are the reasons for love?” and “Are there any reasons for love?” The main theme of this essay is whether love can be justified by rational reasons or if it exists independently of them. It will draw on various philosophical perspectives to argue that while reasons may contribute to love. To do so, the papers will be reviewed that include reasons and love. Furthermore, this essay will attempt to answer these questions by investigating and comparing the no-reason view versus the reason view, from these research papers. Ultimately, the findings from the research paper give a further understanding of the relationship between love and reason.&nbsp;</span><span></span></p>
