Pengaruh Fear of Missing Out terhadap Phubbing pada Generasi Z

Abstract. Technological advancement has brought positive impacts, particularly in terms of easier access to information and communication. However, it has also led to new challenges in social interactions, such as phubbing. This phenomenon occurs partly due to the rapid flow of information, which triggers individuals’ fear of missing out (FoMO), prompting them to frequently check social media for the latest updates. Previous research on the relationship between FoMO and phubbing has shown mixed results. Therefore, this study aims to examine the influence of online FoMO on phubbing among Generation Z. A non-experimental quantitative approach with a causal design was employed, involving 372 respondents selected through convenience sampling. The instruments used were the adapted version of the Online Fear of Missing Out Inventory (ON-FoMO) by Kurniawan & Utami (2022) and the adapted version of the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP) by Isrofin (2020). Data were analyzed using multiple regression to assess the influence of FoMO dimensions on phubbing. The results showed an R² value of .714, indicating that 71.4% of the variation in phubbing could be explained by FoMO. The findings revealed that FoMO significantly influences phubbing behavior among Generation Z, with the addiction dimension having the strongest effect.
Abstrak. Kemajuan teknologi membawa dampak positif dalam hal kemudahan akses informasi dan komunikasi, namun juga menimbulkan permasalahan baru dalam interaksi sosial, seperti phubbing. Hal ini disebabkan karena cepatnya arus informasi membuat individu takut tertinggal informasi (FoMO), sehingga cenderung terus memeriksa media sosial untuk mendapatkan perkembangan terkini. Penelitian mengenai FoMO dan phubbing masih menunjukkan hasil beragam, sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh FoMO dalam konteks online terhadap phubbing pada Generasi Z. Pendekatan kuantitatif non-eksperimental desain kausal digunakan dalam penelitian ini, melibatkan 372 responden melalui teknik convenience sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Online Fear of Missing Out Inventory (ON-FoMO) versi adaptasi Kurniawan & Utami (2022) dan Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP) versi adaptasi Isrofin (2020). Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan regresi berganda untuk melihat pengaruh dimensi-dimensi FoMO terhadap phubbing. Hasil analisis menunjukkan nilai R² = .714, mengindikasikan bahwa 71.4% variasi phubbing dapat dijelaskan oleh FoMO. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa FoMO berpengaruh signifikan terhadap phubbing pada Generasi Z. Dimensi addiction merupakan dimensi yang memiliki pengaruh paling tinggi terhadap phubbing.
