Portrait Carolina, Princess, later Queen of England (1683-1737)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Princess Caroline. Born Markgräfin of Brandenburg-Ansbach was queen of Great Britain and Ireland and elector of Hanover by marrying George II in 1727. She is also considered one of the biggest patrons of Georg Friedrich Händel, who created a Funeral Anthem for her funeral celebrations on behalf of George II. Here you can see the princess as a chest image facing to the right in the three-quarter profile, the head turned slightly to the right, the eyes directed directly at the viewer. She wears a precious dress with jewelry buckles, the hair is raised and decorated with pearl necklaces. The effigy is adorned by an oval frame with scattered plant ornaments. The frame rests on a postament with inscription and a round cartouche with various coat of arms and a crown as its upper end. The British Museum has only one variant of the present leaf, which was engraved by John Smith. The National Portrait Gallery in London, on the other hand, has the same page as here.

Inscription: Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. (Stiftung Händel-Haus Halle Foundation)
