Tinjauan Efek Peningkatan Kadar Insulin Fermentasi Umbi Yakon (Smallanthus sonchifolius)

Abstract. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by insulin resistance and decreased pancreatic β-cell function, leading to impaired insulin secretion. Long-term use of antidiabetic drugs such as glibenclamide may cause complications including hypoglycemia, weight gain, increased risk of hepatotoxicity, myocardial infarction, and gastrointestinal disturbances, thereby encouraging the search for alternative therapies based on natural products. Fermented yacon roots (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is known to contain fructooligosaccharides, inulin, and phenolic compounds that have the potential to stimulate insulin synthesis. This article is a literature review study that utilizes various relevant sources related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, fermented yacon roots, and the mechanisms underlying insulin enhancement. The fructooligosaccharides, inulin, and phenolic compounds present in fermented yacon roots play a role in triggering signaling pathways involved in insulin formation and secretion and in mitigating pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, thereby optimizing insulin production.
