Sulla simbologia della lunetta delle Pieve di S. Siro a Cemmo / On the symbolism of the lunette of the Pieve di S. Siro in Cemmo

In località Cemmo, Valle Camonica (BS), si trova la piccola Pieve romanica dedicata a San Siro la cui facciata meridionale presenta un portale lunettato riccamente decorato. Al centro della lunetta è scolpito un cherubino, affiancato da due draghi a sinistra e un’aquila a destra, e reca alla base un’iscrizione latina che recita: HINC D[EU]S INTRANTES AD TE B[E]N[E]DIC PROPERANTES. Questo articolo si propone di approfondire il legame tra l’iscrizione, l’apparato iconografico e il contesto culturale in cui la lunetta è stata ideata e prodotta, analizzandone le possibili fonti e motivazioni storiche. Partendo dallo studio dell’iscrizione si è ricostruito il legame tra testo e immagine, anch’essa analizzata attraverso le fonti scritte e con la comparazione con altre rappresentazioni con un soggetto simile. The small Romanesque parish church of San Siro is located in the Valle Camonica in Cemmo (BS). Its southern façade has a richly decorated portal with a lunette. In the center of the lunette there is a carved cherub flanked on the left by a pair of dragons and on the right by an eagle. At the base of the scene is a Latin inscription which reads: HINC D[EU]S INTRANTES AD TE B[E]N[E]DIC PROPERANTES. The aim of this article is to explore the relationship between the inscription, the iconographic scheme, and the historical context in which the lunette may have been conceived and produced, focusing on its possible sources and historical motivations. Starting from a study of the inscription, the relationship between text and image is reconstructed. The image is also examined through its sources and comparisons with other similar representation.
