Emil Artin (1898-1962): Seine wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse in der Mathematik erregten allgemeine Aufmerksamkeit und hatten weitreichende Konsequenzen für die Forschung. Der glänzende Stil seiner Vorträge wies ihn als virtuosen Denker aus und machte ihn zum begehrten Lehrer. Artin war Ordentlicher Professor am Mathematischen Seminar an der Universität Hamburg. Als die Nationalsozialisten ihn 1937 aufgrund der "Nürnberger Gesetze" in den Ruhestand versetzten, emigrierte er in die USA. Erst 1958 kehrte er wieder an die Universität Hamburg zurück.
