Isaiah in Latin

View through CrossRef
The book of Isaiah has been used and studied in the West, mainly in Latin translations, for over a thousand years, and by many of the most important theologians there. The importance of these translations for Christian theology and praxis cannot, therefore, be overestimated. This essay gives an overview on the transmission of Isaiah in Latin textual traditions. It presents translations of Isaiah in ancient Latin versions, Vetus Latina, and Vulgate, and then discusses how these translations were used in the early church and early Middle Ages. Some important topics, such as the person of Isaiah, Messianic promises and Christology, ecclesiology and the polemics against the Jews, pilgrimage, and liturgy, are presented as examples of how the Latin translations of Isaiah were used in the West.
