Soviet Yiddish propaganda poster “Subscribe to ‘Emes’,” 1920s

View through Europeana Collections
The poster - “Abonir zikh afn ‘Emes’” in original Yiddish - promoted subscription campaign of the Soviet Bolshevik party-sponsored Yiddish newspaper “Emes” (“The Truth”). The title imitated the main party organ’s title “Pravda” published in Russian. The poster depicts the newspaper’s title shaped as to resemble the Kremlin wall, perhaps, thus emphasizing the publication’s firm official position. The poster also lists subscription prices (7.5 rubles for one year; 4 rubles for 6 months, 2 rubles for 3 months; 75 kopeks for 1 month), and the newspaper’s address in Moscow: 1 Staropanskii Lane (next door to the party’s Central Committee). Designed by “A.H” (artist’s initials in Hebrew letters alef and hei in the bottom left corner; same signature as on POST_00010). Printed by the publishing house “Emes” in Moscow. Print run is 12,000 copies.
