La création de la colonie latine d'Aix est l'œuvre d'Auguste, durant son principat (-27/+ 14), et l'élévation au rang de colonie romaine est postérieure à l'époque de Vespasien. La révision d'une inscription de Narbonne (CIL, XII, 4409 = HGL, XV, 99) permet d'éliminer la restitution [(duum)vi]r praetor, qui avait été admise par Hirschfeld. La magistrature qui apparaît est celle de praetor Aquis Sextis. Elle vient compléter, aux origines de la cité, l'inscription d'un autre praetor (CIL, XII, 517 et p. 814 = ILN, Aix- en-Provence, 27).
