Evaluation of Indian Musa Germplasm for Resistance to Radopholus similis in Greenhouse

View through CrossRef
Fifty nine wild and cultivated banana genotypes (Musa spp.) including 10 diploids (AA, AB and BB genome) and 49 triploids (AAA, AAB, ABB) belonging to the Eumusa section, were evaluated for their host reaction against the burrowing nematode (Radopholus similis) under greenhouse conditions. Reduction in plant growth parameters was comparatively higher in susceptible genotypes when inoculated with nematodes. Root studies indicated higher number of roots, root fresh and dry weight in resistant and tolerant accessions even after nematode inoculation. Based on the corm grade, root necrosis percentage and the reproduction rate of nematode, the level of resistance to R. similis was assessed. The experiment revealed that the diploid accessions, Kanai Bansi (AA), Elakkiebale (AB), M. balbisiana (BB), Bhimkol (BB), Athiakol (BB) and Aittakola (BB) were resistant. Among triploids, Kothia (ABB) and Ankur II (ABB) were resistant to R. similis.

Based on the corm grade, root necrosis percentage and the reproduction rate of nematode, the level of resistance to R.
similis was assessed.
The experiment revealed that the diploid accessions, Kanai Bansi (AA), Elakkiebale (AB), M.
