Vishnu

View through Europeana Collections
Vishnu is the protector of mankind, the benevolent deity responsible for preserving the order of the universe, and the antithesis of Shiva. His worship spread during the Gupta Empire (AD 320-550). He is often depicted with a crown and four arms - holding a conch shell, a sun disc, a club and a lotus flower in his hands - or sleeping, stretched out on the serpent Sesa, which is floating on the cosmic ocean, before awakening and creating the universe. Vishnu also appears in the company of his main consort, Laksmi, and surrounded by his ten avatars.
