Sitter information: Viscountess Holmesdale, born Lady Julia Mann (2 July 1844-1 September 1883), name changed to Cornwallis 22 October 1844. Only surviving child of the 5th and last Earl Cornwallis. Married 27 August 1862 to William Archer Amherst, Viscount Holmesdale (1836-1910). The Viscountess is buried at Linton. Viscount Holmesdale MP. William Archer Amherst (26 March 1836-14 August 1910) Eldest son of the 2nd Earl Amherst. MP for West Kent 1859-1860 and for Mid-Kent 1868-1880. D.L. and J.P. for Kent. Captain in the Coldstream Guards served in the Crimea 1854-55. Summond to the House of Lords by writ in his father's barony 17 April 1880. First married to Lady Julia Cornwallis (2 July 1844-1 September 1883). Second marriage to Alice D'Alton (d. 25 April 1933) widow of the 5th Earl of Fishburne. Lord Holmesdale succeeded to the earldom 1886. Died without issue. The Lady Elizabeth and the Lady Louisa Cornwallis were the unmarried daughters of the 2nd and last Marquess Cornwallis (died 9 August 1823), and grand daughters of General Marquess Cornwallis KG (1732-1805, buried at Ghazipoor on the Ganges), Governor General of India, Lord Deputy of Ireland. On the death of the 5th Earl Cornwallis in 1852, Lady Elizabeth and Lady Louisa became Lady Julia's (Viscountess Holmesdale) guardians.
