Introduction

This chapter focuses on the life and writings of Athenian historian Xenophon. It recounts Xenophon's rise to success during the fourth year of the 94th Olympiad and how his life was saved by Sokrates at the battle of Delion in 424. It also speculates that Xenophon was possibly born between 430 and 425 as he claimed that he wasn't too young to replace Proxenos as general, who was then about 30 years old. The chapter talks about Xenophon's role in developing Agesilao's new cavalry force when he joined him in Asia Minor and how he might have witnessed or participated in the battle of Koroneia against the Athenians. It also discusses Xenophon's exile from Athens between 399 and 394 during the outbreak of the Korinthian war as his pro-Spartan and anti-Persian activities contradicted current Athenian interests.
