Introduction

Abstract Holiness is the most salient feature ascribed to God in Scripture but has been neglected by philosophers of religion and philosophical theologians. The introduction lays out two theses about holiness that this book’s account of divine holiness assumes. First, it assumes realism about holiness, the view that holiness judgments describe, and that some such positive judgments are veridical. Second, it assumes—along with the consensus of scholars on the how the relationship between God’s holiness and the holiness of creatures is characterized in Scripture—that only God’s holiness is primary; all other holiness is derivative from God’s holiness.
