Inscribed on the front in pencil is: '26'; and on the back in ink: 'Nr 24. Near Afzulgar'; in pencil: 'No.38. Near Afzulgur. May 8. 89.' William Daniell is one day out in his inscription, according to the journal.Thomas Daniell and his nephew William arrived in Calcutta in 1786 and spent the following nine years travelling through virtually unknown parts of India observing and recording with skill and accuracy aspects of the scenery and architecture they encountered. When they returned to Britain they engraved the album of views 'Oriental Scenery' for which they are best known. This view shows a mosque of the Mughal period. It comprises a rectangular sanctuary surmounted by three bulbous domes, a slender engaged minar at each of the four corners, and three arched openings in the eastern facade.
