Ecofeminist and queer intertextuality in the work of Ana Luisa Amaral

This dissertation focuses on the work of Portuguese poet Ana Luísa Amaral (1956- ), who has played a fundamental role in contemporary Portuguese literature and criticism, developing her work as a poet in parallel with her activity as a critic and academic essayist, mainly in the area of feminist and queer studies. My analysis focuses on textual strategies adopted by Amaral to revise the Western literary canon and negotiate poetic authority. Through a queering approach to the canonical politics of literary discourse and the vocabulary of authorship, Amaral emphasizes the potential of inverting and redefining this problematic legacy by redeploying and resignifying it in a dynamic network of intertextual relations. My analysis considers also the poetic subject's relationship with the nonhuman environment and the ethical and aesthetic consequences of such a relationship as articulated by Amaral. This approach, based on Catherine Rigby's concept of the "ecopoetics of negativity," which expresses an untranslatable experience of reality, allows me to analyze the relevance of the nonhuman world to Amaral's strategies of questioning the poetic expression of gendered experience. Finally, I argue that Amaral's ecopoetics of negativity is intrinsically linked with Jack Halberstam's concept of queer failure, in particular with its reliance on counterintuitive forms of knowledge and its refusal of triumphalist views of identity and success. My reading demonstrates how Amaral's multilayered construction of meaning draws both on Western literary traditions and on the nonhuman domain to generate complex aesthetic and political implications that lie in the interplay between nature and culture. Esta dissertação foca-se na obra da poeta portuguesa Ana Luísa Amaral (1956-), que tem desempenhado um papel fundamental, tanto na literatura portuguesa contemporânea, como enquanto crítica e ensaísta académica, sobretudo nas áreas dos estudos feministas e queer. A minha análise foca-se nas estratégias adotadas por Amaral para rever o cânone literário ocidental e negociar a autoridade poética. Através de uma abordagem queer das políticas canónicas do discurso literário e autoral, Amaral enfatiza o potencial de inverter e redefinir esta herança problemática através da sua reconfiguração e ressignificação numa rede dinâmica de relações intertextuais. A minha análise tem, também, em conta a relação entre o sujeito poético e o ambiente não humano, assim como o modo como as consequências éticas e estéticas de tal relação são articuladas na obra amaraliana. Esta abordagem é baseada no conceito de "ecopoética da negatividade," de Catherine Rigby, que expressa a experiência intraduzível da realidade. Assim, este conceito permite analisar a relevância do mundo não humano nas estratégias de questionamento da expressão poética da experiência gendrada na obra de Ana Luísa Amaral. Por fim, defendo que a ecopoética da negatividade está intrinsecamente associada ao conceito de falha queer, de Jack Halberstam, em particular à sua relação com formas contra-intuitivas de conhecimento e com a recusa de visões triunfalistas de identidade e de sucesso. A minha leitura demonstra como esta complexa construção de significado recorre tanto às tradições literárias ocidentais como ao domínio não humano para criar complexas implicações estéticas e políticas que se situam no entrecruzamento entre natureza e cultura.
