Inscribed 'Tidal `bore' coming up the River Hoogley (frm nature) 7/11/81. Howrah (West of Calcutta) seen on the further bank'.A tidal bore is a wave which rushes up river estuaries at exceptionally high tides or flood tides. The wave develops a steep forward slope as it hits the river water flowing in the other direction. Two to three times faster than normal tidal currents, the bore tends to be higher near the banks of the river than in the midstream.
