Watercolour of the Salt Water Lake east of Calcutta by Thomas Prinsep (1800-1830) c.1827-8. Inscribed on the album page, 'Salt Water Lake. c.1827-8, Hollowed date trees as canoes, The Sunderbund wood boats, Calcutta in extreme distance'. The Prinsep's served in India for several generations. Thomas Princep was in charge of the surveying of the Sunderbunds; a large area of fresh and saltwater mangrove swamp in Bengal. In December 1828, Thomas Princep published a 'Survey of the Salt Lake or Marshes adjoining Calcutta'. Five of his brothers were also in India.
