Women in Academic Leadership and Quality Assurance: A Pathway to Viksit Bharat 2047

Women in Indian higher education today occupies a growing yet still disproportionately limited share of leadership positions, despite their remarkable contributions as educators, administrators, researchers, and quality-assurance professionals. As India envisions Viksit Bharat 2047, women’s academic leadership becomes a national imperative central to institutional quality, governance, inclusivity, and future-readiness. This conceptual paper examines the role of women in academic leadership, with emphasis on quality assurance, policy implementation, and administrative governance in higher education institutions (HEIs). Using insights from existing literature, governmental reports, and practical professional observations, the paper explores the challenges women face, ranging from gendered role expectations to structural and institutional barriers. It argues that women leaders bring collaborative leadership styles, ethical decision-making, student-centric reforms, and a deeper commitment to equity—attributes strongly aligned with India’s vision of a knowledge-driven, inclusive, and globally competitive education ecosystem. The paper analyses the significance of women’s leadership in accreditation processes such as NAAC, internal quality assurance systems, policy restructuring from NEP 2020 to Viksit Bharat 2047, curriculum reform rooted in Indian knowledge systems, and digital transformations. Findings suggest that enhancing women’s participation in academic leadership can directly improve institutional performance, governance efficiency, and quality benchmarks. The paper concludes by highlighting the urgent need for institutional support systems, leadership development frameworks, gender-sensitive policies, and research-backed strategies to ensure that women’s leadership becomes a cornerstone of India’s educational transformation towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
