We present sources documenting the passage of Mapuche men Pascual Painemilla, Pascual Coña, and Miguel Ñancuche through Buenos Aires between July and August 1885. A photograph, two newspaper articles, and three letters allow us to verify and clarify the account Coña gave Ernesto Moesbach about the meeting they had with Julio A. Roca, president of Argentina. Comparing the photograph of Painemilla with one taken to Sayhueque allows for a comparative study of the meetings both men had with Roca that year and the different reception each demand would have received, depending on whether they were formulated in Mapudungun or Spanish. Letters written and signed by Painemilla and Coña confirm the latter’s formal role as secretary and offer an insight into some of the arguments used in the demand for the redemption of indigenous women captured by the army.
