L’étude montre, sur trois exemples de niveau collège, comment l’on peut affronter pédagogiquement le malentendu profond relatif aux usages du langage en classe de mathématiques, malentendu qui peut s’installer durablement entre les enseignants et nombre d’élèves. Elle montre aussi qu’il est impossible, dans la pratique, de distinguer les enjeux cognitifs des enjeux langagiers. Il est ainsi fait l’hypothèse que l’attention portée à ces questions permet d’offrir aux élèves un accès à des postures cognitives et des usages langagiers relevant des situations scripturales-scolaires et de la littératie étendue.
