The Neumühle near Haynsburg

On October 1, 1700, Duke Moritz Wilhelm von Sachsen-Zeitz issued a privilege that allowed his wife Maria Amalia to establish and operate a paper, grinding, oil and cutting waste. This mill was called “Neue Mühle unter Sautzschen,” but also “Neue Mühle bey Haynsburg.” It was equipped with numerous prerogatives, including free beer and wine tavern and domestic battles. Only the owner of the Neumühle was allowed the “Lumpen- und Hadersamten” in the Naumburg-Zeitz Abbey and the offices Pegau and Tautenburg. The paper mill helped to meet the ever-increasing demand for paper in the office buildings.
At the beginning of the 20th century the mill was discontinued. The facility of the paper mill reached the Deutsche Museum in Munich and fell victim to an air raid there in 1944. The entire wooden and wheels were already dismantled when this picture was taken.
