Bridging the gap: how cadaveric dissection and cutting-edge technology together shape tomorrow’s medical education
View through CrossRef
Anatomical dissection remains a crucial aspect of medical education, offering hands-on experiences that deepen students’ understanding of human anatomy. Despite challenges from rising costs and the advent of 3D imaging technologies, the unique benefits of cadaveric dissection, including tactile learning, skill development, and contributions to the “hidden curriculum,” are irreplaceable. While virtual and augmented reality tools offer innovative ways to supplement traditional dissection, they cannot fully replicate the multisensory experience necessary for developing manual dexterity, spatial awareness, and critical thinking required in clinical practice. Studies show that students who engage in cadaveric dissection retain anatomical knowledge and practical skills better than those who rely solely on digital tools.
However, combining traditional dissection with advanced 3D technologies provide a balanced approach, enhancing educational outcomes and ensuring that students are well-prepared for clinical demands by leveraging the strengths of both methods.
