Vas. Chongzhen, late Mingdynasty.

VAS, with a cuppy secondary screw cap and silver coining. Curbite, on the edge of the foot, the lower part spherical, the upper pear shaped and drawn out in a narrow neck with slightly turned mouth. On the lower part decor with figures in a landscape. Up a stretcher of flowers, between these large and small leaves. On the neck two groups with a tulip like flower, between these leaf ornaments. Underglaze painting in blue-white on the edge of the feet, and remnants after the litter. Purchased by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl from the master dealer J. Bosshard, Lucerne through Mr. Carl Ulrik Palm, 1911. The vase has certainly been produced for export, it shows the Western fittings added to conceal a damage to the neck, but has a vibrant decor taken from the Chinese literature. It depicts “The Battle of Bowang Mountain” from chapter 39 of Romansen on the Three Kingdoms. The hero, Liu Bei, a brilliant politician and leader who founded Shu Han in 221, sent his troops to ambush the enemy. He also set fire to his surroundings and, with the help of strong winds, the fire spread so that the enemy troops were panicked and stumbled when trying to escape. On the vase, a horse-borne soldier gallops towards Bowang Mountain, followed of troops with flaming torches in their hands. On the back Liu Bei is seen driving his horse uphill with a whip. Porcelain vase in gourd form Porin underglaze blue, with later silver mount. Ming dynasty, Chongzhen period (1628-44).
