Correlation Between National Values Consciousness and Corrupt Tendencies of Tertiary Institution Students in Niger State, Nigeria

This study determined the relationship between national values consciousness and corrupt tendency of students of tertiary institutions in Niger State, Nigeria. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population consisted of all final year students in four public tertiary institutions in Niger State. Using random and accidental sampling techniques, 261 students were selected from four tertiary institutions in the State. Data was collected using self-developed and validated instrument titled “Values Consciousness and Behaviour Tendency Scale” with a reliability coefficient of 0.79. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to test the hypotheses in the study. The result showed that there is a significant negative correlation between values consciousness and corrupt tendency of students of tertiary institutions in Niger State and gender did not moderate the correlation that exists between the independent and dependent variables. The study concluded that students who are conscious of the national values have low tendency of engaging in corrupt practices. The study therefore recommended among others that, a course on national values should be taught at all levels in the tertiary institutions irrespective discipline of study to increase students consciousness of the Nigerian core values and regular re-orientation Counselling on Nigeria core values should be organised via seminars and workshops for students in the tertiary institutions of learning.
