Hiratsuka: The ferry on the Banyū-River (Station 7, Print 8)

View through Europeana Collections
Hiroshigega 様 HiHiSheet 8, Station 7. Three men are waiting for a ferry with their horse and luggage, which is supposed to take them across the Banyū River. They have already unpacked their pipes and their tobacco to take advantage of the short break. Smoking was equally common among men and women during the Edo period, and tobacco pouches in the way the man holds on the far left were almost impossible to think away from everyday life. The elongated case was for the pipe, the rectangular bag for the tobacco. These were attached to the belt handy. In the background, the first houses of Hiratsuka Im and the Fuji.
