Predictors of Digital Extension Competence among Agricultural Extension Agents in South-South Nigeria: Evidence from the DECT Tool

Digitalization is transforming agricultural extension systems, making digital competence essential for eff ective advisory service delivery. However, disparities in digital skills among extension agents remain a major constraint in Nigeria’s South-South region.
Objectives: This study assessed the predictors of digital extension competence among agricultural extension agents in the region using the Digital Extension Competency Tool (DECT). Specifi cally, it determined agents’ competence levels, examined sociodemographic and organizational predictors, and identifi ed key determinants
Methods: A multistage sampling procedure selected 180 extension agents across three states, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta. Data were collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate tests, and multiple regression
Results: The fi ndings revealed a moderate overall level of digital extension competence (X̅= 3.29), with strongest skills in digital communication and weakest in digital content creation and technical support. Regression results showed that educational qualifi cation, ICT training exposure, availability of ICT facilities, and organizational support positively and signifi cantly predicted digital competence, while years of service had a negative eff ect. The model explained 55.1 per cent of the variance in digital extension competence.
Signifi cance: The study demonstrates that both individual capacity and institutional support are critical for strengthening digital extension services. Targeted ICT training, improved infrastructure, and sustained organizational support are essential for building digitally competent extension systems in South-South Nigeria
