Oil painting of a tank and tomb within the palace
of Alwar in Rajasthan, by Marianne North, dated November
1878.Initially Marianne North (1830-1890) only painted botanical
specimens and travelled around the world in search of interesting
subject matter. She visited India in 1877-79 and completed over 200
paintings whilst there, painting landscape views as well. The
palace of Alwar dates to the early 19th century and the buildings
are made of marble, decorated with mosaic work and incised with
foliate designs. The tank and marble paved terrace with pavilions
are located within the palace grounds and were often full of ducks,
geese, and swans, as can be seen in this painting. The tomb
overlooks the tank and consists of a grouping of round Bengali
curved cornices.The rocky Aravalli hills surround the palace and
city.
