Wooden Panel Inscribed for Amasis

A wooden, openwork panel inscribed for Amasis and embellished with secondary glass inlays and gilding was disco- vered in 2018 by the Franco-Swiss Archaeological Mission at South Saqqara in a disturbed, archaeological context littered with bovine skeletal remains in the southern section of the pyramid complex of queen Ankhnespepy II. The panel’s openwork design finds its closest parallels in two-dimensional representations of funerary furnishing that suggest that this particular object formed part of the panoply of a sacred animal, suggested to have been a bull, the cults of which were supported by Amasis at Saqqara.
