TWO GEOGRAPHIES, ONE SOUL: SUFISTIC DEPTH IN THE POETRY OF ILHAMI EMIN AND BAHTIYAR VAHAPZADE

View through CrossRef
This article aims to trace Sufi tendencies in modern Turkish literature by comparatively examining the poetry of two prominent Turkish poets, Ilhami Emin and Bahtiyar Vahapzade, who grew up in different geographical and cultural environments. Although they belong to the same nation, one was raised in North Macedonia and the other in Azerbaijan. The study focuses on how Sufism is reflected in their works, which themes stand out, and how these themes are expressed through their poetic language. The research is based on comparative and philological methods. Ilhami Emin, regarded as a cornerstone of North Macedonian Turkish literature, explores Sufi themes primarily through an individual and introspective lens, emphasizing the human soul and spiritual depth. His poetry is enriched with abstract imagery and symbolism, inviting readers into an inner journey and spiritual quest. On the other hand, Bahtiyar Vahapzade, a powerful voice in Azerbaijani literature, addresses Sufi elements not only on a personal level but also from a national and social perspective. His poetry emphasizes the soul of the people, historical identity, and spiritual values. The influence of classical Sufi poets such as Mevlânâ, Yunus Emre, and Fuzûlî is clearly evident in Vahapzade's work. While the two poets differ in their approaches to Sufi poetry, the article reveals that they converge in a shared spiritual sensibility. Ilhami Emin’s inward, symbolic expression and Bahtiyar Vahapzade’s direct and socially grounded poetic voice both represent diverse reflections of Sufism in modern Turkish poetry.
