View through CrossRef
Background: Hemorrhoids, or piles, are a common medical condition associated with discomfort and distress. Patients' understanding of this condition significantly influences their healthcare-seeking behavior and quality of life. Despite their prevalence, misconceptions and knowledge gaps regarding hemorrhoids persist. This study investigates the level of understanding among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital, Manali, Himachal Pradesh. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from July to September 2023. The study included 400 patients aged over 30 years who visited the outpatient department of Civil Hospital, Manali. A convenience sampling technique was used, with the first five patients of each day selected for participation. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 20 structured knowledge-related questions. Validity of the tool was confirmed by experts, and data analysis was performed using Epi Info V7 software. Results: The study revealed that 66.75% of participants exhibited good to very good knowledge about hemorrhoids. Key findings include 70.5% recognizing the need for medical attention, 59% being aware of non-surgical treatment options, and 47.75% identifying specific risk factors for developing hemorrhoids. However, areas of knowledge gaps were identified, including the causes of hemorrhoids (39.75%) and the role of lifestyle factors (45.25%) in their development. Conclusion: While a significant proportion of patients demonstrated good knowledge, specific knowledge gaps were identified in the understanding of hemorrhoids, their etiology, and risk factors. Targeted educational interventions are essential to improve patient knowledge, promote early diagnosis, and enhance the overall management of hemorrhoids in the community.
