Sophocles’ life

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the life of Sophocles, who was an innovator working with the tragic genre. It cites that Sophocles is the only major tragedian to hold public office and acquired experience in government reflected in his studies of rulers. Sophocles’ life was commensurate with the period of Athens’s development into a democratic imperial city where the arts flourished as never before. Sophocles led a society of poets who met privately to honour the Muses. The chapter then discusses the distinctive theatrical conventions of the tragedies Sophocles wrote for outdoor performances in theatres with circular dancing floors in front of a low wooden stage.
