Sophocles’ afterlives

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter considers the legacy of Sophocles. It highlights how Sophocles’ tragedies became instant classics, referencing Antigone as one of the acknowledged masterpieces which constituted the performance repertoire long after the 4th century bce. Moreover, Greek tragedies were turned into operas by the 17th century, ballets by the 18th, and visualized in copious paintings and sculptures during the era of Enlightenment and 19th-century Neoclassicism. All of Sophocles’ plays have been performed in every continent with new translations and adaptations every year. The chapter then discusses the legacies of Oedipus the Tyrant, Antigone, Ajax, Oedipus at Colonus, Electra, Philoctetes, Women of Trachis, and Trackers.
