Gunung Sewu Geopark Sites Naming: A Word Formation Analysis

This paper is a preliminary study whose purpose is to conduct a word formation analysis on the Gunung Sewu geopark site’s naming patterns. The Gunung Sewu geopark is one of the four UNESCO Global Geoparks in Indonesia, which include Ciletuh geopark, Gunung Batur geopark, and Gunung Rinjani geopark. As one of the four UNESCO Global Geoparks, Gunung Sewu has seventeen different named sites that comprise the data of this article. They are Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran, Kali Ngalang, Hutan Wanagama, Air Terjun Sri Gethuk, Goa Kalisuci, Goa Jomblang, Goa Pindul, Lembah Mulo, Pantai Baron, Pantai Krukup, Pantai Krakal, Pantai Siung, Gunung Batur, Pantai Wediombo, Hutan Wisata Turunan, Goa Cokro, and Lembah Kering Sadeng.An analysis of the types of sites determined that among the seventeen named sites, there are five beaches (29%), four caves (23%), two forests (12%), two hills (12%), two mountains (12%), one river (6%), and one waterfall (6%). Furthermore the dominant type of site is a beach. Concerning the word formation, 6% of names were produced through blending, 35% through coinage, 35% through compounding, and 24% through eponym. Coinage and compounding share the highest number of instances.
