Edessa

Abstract Edessa was a major city of Roman Mesopotamia. It was the home of a famous Christian theological school and became a significant site for Syriac intellectual life. Edessa was a significant centre for Christian missionary activity and for Syriac scholarship and scribal production. It was one of the most significant cities of Roman Mesopotamia, both for its importance in trade and its strategic position. It fell to the Sasanians in the early seventh century ce and was incorporated into the territory of the Sufyanid caliphate soon after.
