Anastasius and Persia, 502–506

Abstract In 502, over a century of almost unbroken peace ended on Rome's eastern frontier when the Persian king Kavadh invaded in search of military glory and booty. Amida fell after a long siege. Operations then moved south and focused on Edessa, whose guarantee of divine protection irked Kavadh. Edessa and Constantina survived attacks, and hostilities eventually petered out after four years when threats to Persia's northeastern frontier distracted Kavadh. A truce signed in 506 gradually evolved into a longer‐term arrangement.
