Wayward Witches: Macbeth and the Specter of the Overbury Scandal

View through CrossRef
Abstract: Given connections between Thomas Middleton’s The Witch and revisions made to The Tragedy of Macbeth , the Overbury Scandal, which rocked London from 1615 to 1616, is integral to understanding Macbeth . Yet, the link between the Overbury Scandal and the theatre has so far been examined only with regard to The Witch . Lines likely added to Macbeth in later revisions contain the defining characteristics that render the Weird Sisters recognizable as witches, and they insert Hecate into the play, clearly connecting Macbeth to The Witch , where Hecate is the titular character. This essay examines these connections and the influence of the Overbury Scandal on the text of Macbeth .
