Detached folio from a Qur'an
View through Harvard Museums
This is a detached folio from a very small `Abbasid-era Qur’an. It is written in Kufic script, with thirteen lines to the page, in brownish black ink on parchment. Vocalization is marked with red dots. Section marks are shown with golden circles (section 7 on recto) or rosettes (section 8 on verso). Most likely every tenth verse is marked in gilded writing in the margin (here next to the 60th verse of sura 6). The text consists of Sura 6 (Al-Anaam/ the Cattle): 55 (last two words) - 60 (recto); and 6: 61-68 (verso). The verso is the flesh side of the parchment and thus ink is less well preserved. 23 additional folios from the same Qur'an is now in the Arthur M. Sackler and Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C (F1997.27.1-23a-b).
