Kemény Zsigmond és Jósika Miklós a 19. századi magyar irodalom – Jókai mellett – legjelentősebb írói. Regényeik értelmezése ugyanakkor a mai olvasó számára sokszor hozzáférhetetlen, idegen eszmetörténeti kontextusokba ágyazódik. A tanulmány a 19. századi regényekben megjelenő szülő–gyerek hasonlóság fiziognómiai jelentéseit vizsgálja, és ezzel a tárgyalt regényeket európai irodalomtörténeti és eszmetörténeti kontextusukba állítja. A regények értelmezése így felmutatja azt a gazdag és erős európai eszmetörténeti áramlatot, amellyel a tárgyalt regények élénk párbeszédben állnak.
